Rams come from behind to book a place in the semis

With Southend City Council calling off all pitches across Southend this week, the A Team county cup fixtures was frantically rearranged to be held on Hutton's 3G pitch. Foregoing home advantage was a risk the team was willing to take, in the hopes of keeping their run of good form going and getting the game played.

It didn't start well for the Rams, who struggled to get going. Hutton capitalised and the Rams found themselves 2-0 down early on. The Rams missed some chances before Callum Horncastle managed to win a penalty, which was expertly converted by Cameron Jarvis. Rams were back in the game but just before half time, Hutton bagged another to give them a deserved 3-1 lead at the break.

Gaffer Jake Fairman made a couple of tactical tweaks and gave some inspiring words to help spark an amazing comeback. The Rams started the second half playing much better football - more intensive and with a proper Rams passion that allowed their quality to come through. After a corner had been cleared, a ball was sent back into the box where is was flicked on by the head of Joe Howson. Brett Deeming managed to squeeze the ball in from a tight angle with a lovely finish, to make it 3-2 and game on.

The Hutton backline was now struggling to cope with the pressure the Rams were exerting. A ball was played in behind for Callum Horncastle, who squared it to substitute Mickey Dodkins who was able to tap it into the back of the net after he had made a lung-busting run to get into the box in support. 3-3 and the Rams were all the way back in it.

Some time went on in the game before the final goal, but during that period the Rams still pushed forward, creating chances but unable to find that finishing touch. Hutton had their own chances too - with a special mention to George Perkins who made an heroic block to keep us in the game.

With only 7 minutes to go, George Hanlon pressed their midfielder into giving the ball away, before playing a lovely through ball into the path of the Callum Horncastle. Callum coolly finished beyond the Hutton keeper to put the icing on the cake of his man of the match performance.

The Rams defended well and ran the clock down superbly, before the referee blew the final whistle to jubilant cheers from the Rams. A never say die attitude, passion and quality were on display and the Rams were ultimately deserving of their victory. They will now face Old Barkabbeyans Reserves from the Essex Alliance League in the semi final on Saturday 1st March.
